On earth the cycle that fuels life starts with the sun (Much like in the dark forests), but after that it is completely different between the two worlds. The second step in the forests is fungi.Fungi getting nutrients from the wood and bark of the mountain trees is what gives most of the life below the canopy energy. The third step is the fungivores, Unlike on earth where the predominant consumers are herbivores, in the dark forests plants that grow are very hardy and most are not very nutritious so instead the main diet of non carnivore species is fungi. Then come the carnivores which eat the herbivores, then when these carnivores die they provide nutrients for the mountain trees, and the cycle repeats.
