The separation of the eastern part of the African continent with the expansion of the rift meant a total change in the biodiversity of the resident fauna, since not only did they have to deal with sunstroke on one side, but with specializing in a new medium, the marine . Connected to the coast, the few species that did not turn inland soon took advantage of the varied opportunities in the available niches.

Now after 12 million years of the holocene, the formed subcontinent of Aaru has a fairly flowing and lively west coast which is nourished by marine currents, enough for both visitors, migrants and the few native residents to stay and thrive, one of them a feline who has acquired a taste for swimming, the Aaru Shorecat (Littorafelis aarucus). This medium-sized cat of about 80 cm of length is a diurnal hunter that lives in the coasts, being preferente of the rocky areas where it tends to feed and congenerate with others. Descendant of the genus Felis this gave an interesting change of niche when the territories where they inhabited began to be flooded and to be consumed by the sea, and with the opportunity they eventually changed their niche of forest and land dwellers to one of semi-aquatic animals.

In view these still have a very common feline look, but in certain aspects they differ such as the development of webbed legs, a more compact long body with short legs in comparison to land relatives and a more stylized head and body to be more hydrodynamic. On land it is able to move properly but when it enters the water, it is able to propel itself and swim with its hind legs, almost like an otter with long limbs. They feed mainly on fish, crustaceans and occasionally small mammals in the area which can capture either on small pools or underwater in dives that can last up to 10 minutes without going to the surface. In spite of being congregated, most of the time they are lonely, only being in direct contact with each other at the moment of mating.
